If you’ve started looking for your wedding cake you’ll no doubt be aware that a professional wedding cake will set you back a significant amount, however there are real possibilities to cut this down to a more reasonable figure.  Here are some top tips to help you reduce that wedding cake budget and still get a wedding cake of your dreams.

1. Order from The High Street

Check out what’s available on the high street.  Most supermarkets offer some form wedding cake from plain single tier fruit cakes or sponge cakes with prices as low as £6.  We recommend Asda and Tesco who both stock simple cakes that can easily enhanced by your own creativity.  Use edible glitter for some sparkle or embilsh with real flowers that match your theme – the choice is endless.

For more elaborate and ready to go options Marks & Spencer and Waitrose have some gorgeous cakes that are as good as any professional baker.  Marks & Spencer are a particular favourite being easy to order online and available within 21 days.  The designs are stunning and with fillings including chocolate and vanilla sponge there is something to suit all tastes.

2. Make Your Own

Probably by far the best way to cut the cost is to make your own.  If you’re not a baking savvy bride then perhaps consider asking a friend or relative to make this for you.  If you’re new to cake making then of course you would be best to try this in advance (and enjoy testing your handy work – yum).  Recipes are readily available online – we particularly like Delia Online’s Fruit cake recipe .  One of the most challenging aspects of cake making is the icing.  Check out this little resource on You Tube for additional hints and tips on how to approach icing your wedding cake.

3.  Go Modern and Mini

Cupcakes wedding cakes are a hugely popular trend – and being so easy to make, this is one thing you can really do by yourself.  Let your imagination run wild and with only a small amount of icing required on the top you don’t need to be a master cake baker to make these look good . Why not add a stunning touch by using laser wedding cupcake wrappers to make your wedding cupcakes really stand out.

4. Off The Shelf

If baking is not really your thing, then why not opt for a pile of fairy cakes, chocolate brownies or something like cadburys flake cakes (mega yum in the tum!) – easy to buy ready made but will look fantastic piled high.  Add a personal touch by asking your florist to provide you with mini flowers to place over your display or consider adding some cake decorations such as edible glitter.  Just take a look in your local supermarket or local baker and see what individual cakes they have on offer.  Remeber fresh cream is not a good option as it will tend to go off.  We love Mr Kiplings Angel Cakes or try Asda’s Fondant Fancies – a bargain at only £1.38 for 8!! Asda also do fantastic iced cup cakes for £2.00 – a real savvy bargain – adding your own cake decor will really make these a fantastic option for your cupcake wedding cake.
