Styling The Groom – Part 1
Guys – it’s your wedding and even though it is never a bad thing to be the best dressed guy in the room, it could never be more important than on your wedding day.
How to Get the Right Fit
There are some common mistakes that the well dressed groom will avoid. Some guys just don’t know how to choose well fitted clothes – the shoulders on shirts end at their triceps, or the neck is massive (did you even know that shirt necks have sizes?). If you can fit more than one finger between you and your collar, that neck size is too big. When a suit jacket is buttoned up and you pull it away from your body, there should only be the length of your thumb between your body and the jacket. Any more space and the jacket is also not right for you.
With the trousers, lower waistlines will make your torso look longer whereas a higher waistline will make your torso appear shorter and more stocky. A longer length jacket will make you look like you have short legs, and obviously then, a shorter jacket will make them seem longer. Maybe not the usual guy thing to do, but you really need to try on a few different styles to make sure you get the right fit and shape for you.
Choosing a Suit and Accessorising
A well tailored suit will make you look sharp, stylish and – importantly – will impress the bride. However, while the right suit is great, you need to add your own personal style to it and men, yes, even men, can accessorise …add pocket squares, a sharp tie, quality shoes. If you are buying rather than renting a suit, why not check the lay of the land with a trip to a high end suit retailer to pick the salesman’s brain. Without getting talked into buying yet – take the time to ask about style trends, seasonal colours and how to accessorise the look. If you do intend to rent a suit, you need to make sure it fits in with the bride’s theme for the wedding.
