Picking Your Photographer

Your wedding photographs are one of the most important parts of your wedding. They will store your memories and capture the precious moments of you both on the day. It cannot be underestimated the need to get a great photographer or you could be seriously unhappy with the result.
Selecting a photographer can seem like an overwhelming task but here are a few pointers from the Budget Savvy Bride team to help you get started.
- What style do you have in mind? Think about what style of wedding photography you would like. Many people opt for the reportage style and the capturing people unaware. Be warned however, formal shots still have their place – you’ll need to consider this as the shots of the side of guests as they eat dinner lose all importance when you don’t have any of you with your key bridal party.
- Get recommendations: Ask around and see if friends or family have used any photographers in the area. It will be a minefield to start with as there are so many photographers around – this will help you narrow it down.
- Get quotes: Start to get quotes. Ring around and look online for this information. Ask what packages they offer – does it include a copy of the images on high resolution disk, does it include an album. What you are looking for is good value for money without losing the quality of your wedding day photos.
- Cheap doesn’t always mean good: You may be tempted by the offer of someone doing your shoot for a fraction of others – be warned – check the quality of pictures taken – there is usually a reason for the price.
- Review their portfolio: A good photographer should be happy to show you their previous work. This may be available online or a visit to their studio.
- Are they experienced: The offer of someone doing your wedding photography more cheaply as they don’t have experience in this type of photography may seem like a great way to save money. However, weddings need a certain approach and you should consider this when you are deciding.
- Photographers style: Its important to check what style and manner your photographer will take on the big day. You will no doubt need someone who will advise and guide you on the day (believe me – you will not be on the ball!) . A happy medium is needed. A photographer who barks at your guests and does not make you feel relaxed its going to stress you out. Similarly – opt for one who is too casual and you may end up missing crucial shots.
- Too expensive? Don’t be afraid to negotiate. If the price is too high ask how this can be reduced? Will they do a CD only option and you can organise your own prints. Will they reduce the album size? Don’t go for the pre-wedding shoot. If you have a budget and they are over this – tell them.
Happy hunting!
